Five Aromatherapy Champions

Pure essential oils have been used for centuries to soothe, clean and heal everything from our bodies to our surroundings, easing our moods, aches, and pains. The practice of Aromatherapy utilizes concentrated plant extracts that retain the essence of their original source, and then work their magic each time we breathe in. Studies show that our sense of smell can activate the limbic system, the part of the brain that contributes to emotions, long-term memory and certain physiological functions (this is why the smell of a favorite meal can trigger memories of childhood or feelings about a significant person or place).

While research is contradictory, Aromatherapy is popularly used in massage to enhance relaxation and healing. Essential oils may be incorporated into a massage oil or lotion, or diffused into the massage treatment area.

There are hundreds of essential oils, each with its own unique properties and benefits. These are few of our favorite Aromatherapy enhancements at Maui’s Best Massage + Spa (note: none of the following essential oils are intended to be ingested, or applied to the skin undiluted. Please consult with your massage therapist before experimenting at home) :

  • Lavender
Sometimes used to help purify skin, Lavender oil is considered part anti-inflammatory, helpful in healing bug bites or minor burns. Some research suggests using the scent of lavender to relieve stress and treat insomnia.
  • Orange
The pleasant scent of Orange essential oil is both uplifting and relaxing at the same time. It is used for its calming effects as well as a boost to the immune system. In massage, Orange is associated with relieving the discomfort of headaches and inflammation.
  • Lemongrass
Traditionally, Lemongrass has been used as an anti-inflammatory and is still a natural choice for reducing the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis or headaches. Lemongrass also enhances relaxation.
  • Eucalyptus
Used most often in massage to revitalize skin and tired muscles, Eucalyptus promotes relaxation, soothes tension and clears the mind. In combination with other essential oils, Eucalyptus is also touted as a remedy for pain and sinus relief and a boost to the immune system.
  • Peppermint
Versatile for almost any part of the body, Peppermint oil treats muscle spasms and tension, soothes inflamed skin, reduces fatigue following periods of physical or mental stress, and invigorates and energizes. Combined with other scents, Peppermint is used to enhance focus and mental clarity.
